Creating links

Shorten, organize, and manage your links like a pro.

Random slugs (free)

Free-tier users can create links with automatically generated 7-character slugs. These are cryptographically random, avoiding common patterns that scanners target. Each link supports a unique destination URL and tracks clicks from the moment it goes live.

Editing and archiving

Need to change where a link points? Open the link detail page, update the destination URL, and save. The short link stays the same — your audience never notices. You can also archive links you no longer need; archived links stop redirecting but remain in your history for reporting.

Organization tips

Use consistent naming in your destination URLs or add URL parameters to group links by campaign. For example, append ?utm_source=newsletter to every email link so your downstream analytics stay clean. In the future, alterlink will support tags and folders for even easier organization.

Best practices

  • Test every link before sharing publicly.
  • Use HTTPS destinations wherever possible.
  • Avoid shortening links that already contain sensitive tokens or credentials.
  • Monitor click anomalies in your analytics dashboard.
